Five to Watch: The Fact-based Films of Al Pacino

Ahead of the much-anticipated release of The Irishman (2019), in which Pacino plays Jimmy Hoffa, we’ve expanded our “five to watch” list to seven to look at some of the actor’s other real-life portrayals.

1. Serpico (1973)

In one of his greatest roles and best-known films, Pacino plays honest New York City police officer, Frank Serpico, who put his career and his life on the line to expose corruption within the NYPD.

2. You Don’t Know Jack (2010)

In this TV movie, Pacino portrays infamous doctor Jack Kevorkian, an advocate of assisted suicide, who takes his fight all the way to the Supreme Court.

3. The Insider (1999)

Pacino plays 60 Minutes producer Lowell Bergman, who encourages a tobacco industry whistleblower to go public with his malpractice claims.

4. Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

Based on a 1972 Life magazine article about bank robber John Wojtowicz, the film stars Pacino as the fictionalised Sonny Wortzik, whose criminal plan quickly goes awry.

5. Phil Spector (2013)

In this TV movie, Pacino takes on the role of famed music producer Phil Spector (known for his Wall of Sound), who, in the late 2000s, went on trial for murder.

6. Donnie Brasco (1997)

Pacino takes on the role of mobster Lefty Ruggiero, who takes young Donnie Brasco under his wing and gets him close to the mafia, unaware that he’s really an undercover FBI agent.

7. Paterno (2018)

Another TV movie. In this one, Pacino plays successful college football coach Joe Paterno, who becomes embroiled in a sex abuse scandal involving fellow coach Jerry Sandusky.
